Cost Saving Tips 101

When designing a new home there are a few things to keep in mind that can save you lots of money. In this difficult economy it’s important to know where you can save money and where you need to spend it. Knowing these things will give you the most bang for the buck and will give you the greatest chance of success with your new home.

During the last few years of the building boom and before the economic bust cost of construction was not a consideration for many people. I was amazed at how many young people who were building a starter home would come it to meet with me and would not be interested in cost savings. The only thing that mattered was resale value. The big question was, “Can we sell it for more than it cost us to build?”. In an “up” market the answer was, “yes”. Therefore, granite countertops, 10′ coffered ceilings, tile roof, etc. etc..

While those things do add value to homes in an upward moving market and they do add to the appraised value and they also add to the “curb appeal”, they don’t necessarily add to the sale value or to what I call, the “True Value”. The “True Value” is what are you going to get out of it and can it be done within your budget?.

I have enough hands-on experience with building along with 20 years in designing homes and working with various contractors that I know where cuts can be made that are effective in both saving you money and still maintaining value in the home. A half-hour face-to-face interview with a professional designer about your desired home can be very beneficial. I offer free interview consultations where you can learn about the process and focus your goals and desires.
